Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie and Clyde

Arthur Penn

I noticed that i was fallen in this film when i was watching this. The plot was really exciting and it was really ……..uh… fun. I couldn’t watch the very beginning of this film because i was late, but i could understand what was going on. I loved several scenes which make me to keep thinking of those.

First, i loved how the main characters get the colleagues by the time goes on. At first, only two of them tried robbed the bank, and they get the guy who fix the cars, and the Clyde’s brother, and his wife. At last, they all fight with the cops and do the crimes. I loved their communications, and the lives. I hoped they to be together all the time.

Another thing that i liked was that the humors or the jokes which they said. Even though they had a dangerous events, they become more excited after that. There were many scenes about fighting between bonnie and clyde, but they become just normal as before.

The last one is the last scene. I was really sad when Clyde’s brother dead, and now they were willing to die. I hoped to them to escape from there but they just died. And they didn’t die by one shot. They had lots of shots on their bodies, and died. I was curious that why did the director showed all of the shots when they died. I might recognize that they are dead by one shots on their body. However, the director didn’t.

In this film, i think all of the scenes were important, and these scenes made such a really nice work. I hope i can watch this kind of film much more in my life.

2nd Question : The Materiality of Film

Movie : Psycho

Director : Alfred Hitchcock

Scene : Shower scene

 watch?v=8VP5jEAP3K4&feature=share

Short

In this write, I will explain about a scene from “Psycho” by Alfred
Hitchcock. I suppose that the most interesting scene in this film is a shower
scene because of the techniques which the Hitchcock used. In this 1 scene, there
were lots of interesting and skillful techniques such as the point of view
(P.O.V), close up (CU), background music, and cutting.

The first technique is changing of the point of view. First, during the
Marion was washing, the point of view was third point of view. After that the
shower head was shown by Marian’s point of view, which is second point of view. When the murderer pushed away the curtain, the point of view was the third point of view. During the murder, it kept changed from, murderer’s point of view, which is second point of view, and viewers’ point of view, which is third point of view. After the murder, the point of view was third point of view. As these, Hitchcock used lots of changing of point of views in this scene for more thrill.

The second technique is the close up. In this film Hitchcock closed up to unexpected things. For examples, he first closed up to Marian’s lip when the murder happened. During the murder, he closed up to Marian’s stomach, hands, face, neck, murderer’s knife and the wall. After that, he closed up to Marian’s hand which was grabbing the curtain with an out of focus. And finally, he closed up to the eye of Marian’s when she fell down. This shot made the mood really scary in this scene.

The third technique is the using the background music. In this film, there were lots of interesting background music, and Hitchcock used the background music other than making the mood scary. For example, the music started when the murderer came in to the bath. This music made the mood really urgent. And after the murder, the background music changed. The music made the mood bleak. And these background music were used to make us to realize that Marian is dead. This technique made this scene to be more interesting.

The last techique is cutting. As everyone could see, there were really many cuts during the murder. There were about seventy cuts. During the murder, it started with Marian’s face, and changed to Marian’s lip, and changed to face of murderer, and changed again to Marian, and again to murderer, and whole body of Marian, and knives, and again to Marian and to murderer and it repeated for the several times until the murder ends. I could see that how the director worked really hard in this scene.

Of course, there are specific reasons that why Hitchcock used these techniques. The main reason is to make the mood scary. Among those, the cutting was used to make the mood urgent. And the background musics were used to make us to know that the murder is happening. Which mean is that we could know that there were murder and she’ll die soon even though there were no such shots that shows stabbing or poking arms, legs or any body parts. The reason is by the background musics. The background musics made us to become aware of those things.

In conclusion, these techniques, which are point of view, close up, background music, and cutting, made this scene really famous and valuable scene in the film history. Of course, not only because of these techniques, but the actors, and the filmmakers also helped a lot. I suppose that we could see how the Hitchcock and the other filmmakers worked really hard to make this scene. I think that because of these filmmakers, techniques, and hard works, this scene could be exist.

Not like today’s movies, which are 2hours long, this movie is just 13m 29s, and i felt a lot by this film. This film’s main theme is DREAM. At first, i wasn’t sure (still im not sure) what author was trying to say through this film.  What i understand is that a really little thing or happen can be a really big event in individual’s thoughts. For example, in the beginning of the film, after she followed a mistery black girl, she went in to the room and act something. This shots were repeated again and again by some different events, and these made a girl die.

After i get home on friday, i watched this film again and again , i learned something little by little.

The scene that i liked in this film was that scenes that a girl run with the knives through sleeping girl, and the background changed step by step. I watched this shots several times, and i wondered why did the director keep change the background? and im still wondering… i dont know the answer.. I will study more…

Early Summer by Yasujiro Ozu

First, i was glad that we can watch Asian movie in American class.
It was first time that i watch Asian women or men in our class(not in class but anyways..) who were so familiar to me. I was happy….ok..

I think this film was all about decisions. Will Noriko marry?, will Yabe’s wife follow his son to go to country? or even will Mamiya buy the cake?.. In this film, there were a lot of decisions. Even though those decisions didn’t cause death, it does cause life’s tiredness or a sense of fatigue.

This film had many episodes, and at the some shots, there were weird silences. When the daughter should go marry, when the friends didn’t come to his house, when the kids went out from the house. I felt that the author showed these silences to show feeling of worried and affirmations at the same time. For examples, when the kids went out, the author showed the silences, and it means(to me) that he’s worrying about them but he is also thinking that they will come back. He’s rejecting the real happenings.

I think Ozu wanted to say that deciding is what we should take in our lives and we should have responsible to that. This films shows the society of Japan and how they behaved at the past by deciding in lives. I felt the humility in this film and it was really interesting because Japan is just next to my country and had many conflicts with them.. I learned how they lived in the past, and it was funny to compared with my countries…

At this scene, there were a lot of styles, or techniques that the author used. Fisrt, the author used the unusual lighting technique. He used a lamp for the low key lighting. Throughout this scene, almost all of them were low key lighting. Second, every shot were focused on the characters. Which means, the chracters on this scene was extremely important. For the last, everything was found out by the main character’s friend. Usually, a police or an enemy find out everything;however, this film wasn’t.

I think the filmmakers used the lamp because they wanted to make the mood of this scene to be more dark, and serious. If the light were shinning, this scene’s mood won’t be dark. We can learn that not only the music, or tones of the characters, but also the light can make the mood different. The focuses of every shots were on the characters because the filmmakers wanted to make us to focus on what the chracter’s are saying, talking, and doing. This scene is what everything is resolving; therefore, they made us to focus on what they are expecting. We can learn that by focusing on, we can concentrate what the filmmakers want. I think that the filmmakers decided to let the heroine’s friend find out everything because they wanted to make this scene’s mood to be sad. If police resolved everything, we would think “ok.. it ends”, but we thought (at least i thought) “wow… i really didn’t expect this..” We can learn that  by using unexpected happening, it can make the viewers’ emotions to be happy, sad, angry, weird or funny.

Umberto D.

Umberto D.
Vittorio De Sica

Umberto was an honest and clean and retired civil servants. He got fixed income to pay the rent and some foods but he gets really low. He will kicked out from his house eventhough he was old and kind with his dog, flike.

I had some events that keep recalling in my mind.

First one was when the worker on a house, who was pregnant, and was crying and working . I didn’t know why she were crying when she saw the cat on the roof at first. On a morning, she started to work. To me, it seemed that she were adjust to those life. When she were scratching the match to the wall and drawing white lines, I felt really sad. She was really young, and she had dreams for better life but she were working on a house to earn money. And she will be kicked out when the owner knew that she wass pregnant. After I see these, I knew why she were crying when she saw the cat. I think she was envious of cat that it is living whatever it wants which means that the cat had freedom.

Second one is when he lost his dog, flike.  He was poor, no family, but I think he could live because of flike. We could see how important his dog to him. After he lost his dog, he went to slaughterhouse(?), and saw a lot of dogs are going to die and He was frightened. When he finally found flike, even i was so happy that flike was alive.

Last one is last scene of this film and last shot of this film. After he decided not to die and went to flike. He persuaded flike to play with him and finally flike went to him to play. The camera was staying and shooting both and Umberto and flike was going away playing and the film ends. When I saw this shot, I felt somewhat sad and happy at the same time. I was happy because he get returned flike again and he didn’t die. And I was sad because nothing was resolved. I couldn’t imagine how hard life he will get. He had no money, food, nothing except the dog. This scene was the most memorable scene in this film to me.

This film shows the reality of this world. No miracles, helps happened. Nothing was resolved and the film ends. It wasn’t happy ending and also bad ending. I think the author is really smart…. I keep thinking about this film again and again… Anyways I suggest this movie was awesome.
